MARSEILLE

The city that took me by surprise. Many people have told me that Marseille is nothing to be seen; it dirty, run-down and a dangerous. I beg to differ?no, rather I demand to differ. Marseille is a very large and important port city. So, with that in mind, there is a huge immigrant population. And yes, the city center is quite dirty, quite poor and rather run-down (in comparison to other French cities).

But if you let these factors cloud your preception of this city, youl miss out on its charm. One of my favorite experiences in France happened in Marseille! Chloe and I stumbled upon ?em>La f皻e du panier?/em> 2-day long music festival in the old district. Here young local musicians and singers, as well as some more well known artists from other areas of France, come together to celebrate the diversity of the panier and its reputation as a place of refuge for those looking for acceptance. From cover bands of classic French variety to Marseille-style rap groups to DJs playing electro, salsa and classic 80s music, each plaza in the panier had a different program with different music.

Chloe and I danced the nights away in Marseille, and, although Bouillabaisse didn make it into our dining reperatoire, the homemade Tunisian and Moroccain food being sold in the streets of the festival definitely did. People started preparing food during the afternoon, and set up their small card tables along the winding streets to sell their wares: beef skewers, chicken couscous, pastillas, fried dough dumplings and the incredible desserts. There were also people who set up tables with drinks: sangria, beers, mojitos and rhum punch. Chloe and I walked around sampling everything, taking breaks to dance throughout the night.

This festival really made Marseille an extra special experience for the both of us. On our last day, Chloe and I made it to the beaches where we laid out in the sun, had a picnic lunch and recounted our stories of nights past while listening to the waves lapping on the shore. I couldn have asked for a better weekend with my little sister! Thanks to the Marseillais!
