I don’t know why Marseilles is spelled with an “s” in English because the whole time we were in the city, it was spelled without it. Anyway, I went there with Jenna on a semi spontaneous whim to go to the beach. There was a huge Arab population there and at some points I thought I was back in Morocco! Other than that, Marseilles is famous for their fjords which they call the Calanques. On our first full day there, we took 2 buses and ended up at the base of the calanques in a remote little town. We then proceeded to take a “marked” trail through them. We only hiked for an hour until we came across a pretty bay that housed a small home-style restaurant that only served 3 items and whose owners lived in a house next door! After opting for some spaghetti, we went down to the beach and swam in the crystal clear waters!
The next day, we decided to go to this one church (forgot the name) that sat atop a hill overlooking the city. We walked all the way up as we saw busloads of tourists passing us by to the same destination. It was pretty exhausting (but beautiful from the top) so we decided to reward ourselves by taking a bus back down, buying ice cream, and going to the beach again!
Our final day we went to nearby town called Cassis to, of course, go to another beach! We enjoyed some baguettes, cheese and kid’s aka non-alcoholic apple cider while soaking up the sun!
All in all, our trip to Marseilles was very bright and relaxing!
